Free Resizable Dog Clothing Pattern

Instructions:

Step 1: Resizing the Pattern
If you downloaded the original pattern instead of choosing your dog's chest size, you will first need to resize the pattern to fit your dog. Measure your dog around the largest part of his or her chest. After cutting the pattern on the fold and opening it up, the width from the red X to the red X should be 4" larger than your pet's chest.

If you print the original pattern at 100%, it will fit a dog or puppy with a 12" chest. At 85%, it would fit a pet with a 10" chest. 120%, it would fit a dog with a 14 1/2 chest(you'll need a printer that prints on 12" X 12" in order to make it this large). After printing, measure it to make sure it's 4 inches larger than your dog's chest(from the red X to the red X).

Step 2: Cutting the Pattern
Cut the pattern from fabric of your choice, I used a plaid flannel fabric. You can make the vest reversible by choosing two different fabrics. Cut 1(on fold) from each of the 2 fabrics or cut 2(on fold) if you will be using one fabric choice. Note: For extra padding, cut 1(on fold) from quilt batting.

After cutting, you will have 2 pieces that look like this when you unfold them.

Step 3: Sewing the Pattern
Place the 2 pieces right sides together and sew them together along the dotted lines indicated on the printable pattern. Use a 1/4 inch seam. If you are using batting, make that the bottom layer and place the other 2 pieces on top, right sides together.

Leave the sides with the red X's open. Clip the corners, to your seam, where you see the blue X's. You may also want to clip along the neckline(highlighted in green).

Next, pull the vest through one of the openings, so that it is right-side out. You will end up with raw edges where you see the red X's above. Tuck the edges in about 1/4 inch and sew them closed.

Step 4: Attaching the Velcro
The last step is to attach the velcro. Attach the soft side of the velcro where you see the red X's below. Then turn the vest over and attach the rough side where you the blue X's.
